Spellcasters

Here you will find all those famous spellcasters on Buffy! Willow is da best I must say!!

WILLOW
Appearances: seasons 1 to 7, all episodes.
First serious spell ever cast: Becoming parts 1&2, spell to restore Angel's soul.
Memorable spells: Spell to have her will done in Something Blue, spell to put the Scoobies' soul into the vessel in Primeval, spell to bring Buffy back to the living in Bargaining parts 1&2, the evil spells in Villains and Two to Go, and the spell to end the world in Grave.
Magickal: Our little uber-witch! As the original Scooby, Willow Rosenberg appeared on the show from the very first episode, but it wasn't until season 2 that she started to get an interest in the occult. After some dabbling, Willow cast her first powerful spell in Becoming, thus restoring Angel's soul. Her protection and other spells help Buffy out on numerous occasions. Of course, her spells tended to go awry in the beginnings. Once, she set the bed on fire when turning ice to fire, and who can forget the spell that made Buffy and Spike think they were engaged! But floating feathers and pencils soon made way for strong witchcraft, with which she helped out Buffy in episodes like Primeval.
Willow and girlfriend Tara made an extremely powerful duo, but all the while Willow grew stronger and in the fifth season she was already much more powerful than most other witches -including Tara. The fact that she succeeded in bringing Buffy back to life worried Tara and angered Giles, but Willow was convinced she knew what she was doing. She slowly became dependant on the magics, at which Tara left her. A depressed Willow turned to her old witch-friend Amy, who introduced her to Rack. Rack made Willow addicted to magic, causing her to endanger her friends. After this debacle, Willow swore off magic...
However, the magic was a part of her, and when Tara -with whom she'd just gotten back together- got killed by Warren, the dark forces took over Willow and she killed Warren. An empowered Giles returned to Sunnydale to battle her. Unfortunately, Willow drained his powers, causing her to feel all the emotions in the world. Desparate, she tried to end the world, but was stopped in time by Xander. She joined Giles in England, where she was taught about the essence of magic, before returning to Sunnydale...

TARA
Appearances: seasons 4 to 6 (from Hush to Seeing Red), except for Superstar, Smashed, Gone, Doublemeat Palace and As You Were.
First serious spell ever cast: Spell to move a vending machine towards a door (with Willow) in Hush.
Memorable spells: Spell to call upon the Goddess Thespia, spell to find out who's in Buffy's body in Who Are You?, spell to embody the demon in After Life and the spells she did in Normal Again.
Magickal: Tara Maclay first appeared on the show in the season 4 episode 'Hush'. She was a part of Willow's wicca group, and she and Willow were the only ones prepared to do 'proper' magic. They hooked up to do spells and rituals, and after some time they got together as a couple. Tara was raised in a family where men were very dominant, and after her mother's death Tara moved away to college because she was afraid her brother and father wouldn't approve of the lifestyle. Her mother had taught Tara witchcraft when she was little, and therefore she was already very advanced when she met the Scoobies.
She and Willow did some very powerful spells like calling on the Goddess Thespia, travelling to the underworld and making a demon solid. However, Tara was focused on white magic while Willow started getting interested in the dark arts. They split up but Tara continued to help out the Scoobies, like she did in Normal Again. Finally, she and Willow got back together, but their happiness didn't last long since Tara's life was tragically ended in 'Seeing Red' when she got hit by a stray bullet...

GILES
Appearances: seasons 1 to 7 except for season 6's Bargaining part 2, After Life, Smashed, Wrecked, Gone, Doublemeat Palace, Dead Things, Older and Far Away, As You Were, Hell's Bells, Normal Again, Entropy, Seeing Red and Villains.
First serious spell ever cast: Spell to trap Catherine in Witch.
Memorable spells: Circle of Kayless in I Robot, You Jane, spell to try and restore Angel's soul, spell to battle veiny Willow.
Magickal: Rupert Giles was part of an occult group in England when he was in college and completing his Watcher training. Luckily, he turned his back on this lifestyle on became devoted to being a Watcher. Every now and then, he performed a spell to bind demons, protect his Slayer or summon spirits. The first time we saw him perform a spell was in the thirs episode, 'Witch'. During the following seasons, he had to face his old 'friend' Ethan Rayne, who had been his black-art-buddy but wasn't reformed... During seasons 5 and the first episodes of season 6, Giles decided to make money with his knowledge, and opened a store for magical supplies called 'The Magic Box'. The most powerful spell he ever did was during season 6. When Willow's evil powers were rising, a very powerful English coven infused him with their power, which he used to kick her butt. Unfortunately, she drained his powers, thus becoming even more powerful. However, this had been Giles's intention all along, because this pure essence of magic tapped into the last bit of humanity she had left, and saved her...

JENNY
Appearances: season 1 'I Robot, You Jane' to season 2 Passion. She also re-appeared in Becoming part 2 and season 3's Amends.
First serious spell ever cast: Circle of Kayless with Giles, in I Robot, You Jane.
Memorable spells: The Circle of Kayless, the spell she found to restore Angel's soul.
Magickal: Jenny -Jana- Calendar was a 'cyberpagan', a modern gypsy witch and computer teacher. Her people cursed Angel, and she had been raised in the ancient magickal tradition. She first appeared in season 1's 'I Robot, you Jane' as a possible love interest to Giles. Together, they cast powerful spells like the one that trapped Moloch into the book. She was the only one who knew the consequences of Angel's curse, and was instructed to make sure he and Buffy didn't get together. When Angel lost his soul, she managed to find the ancient way of restoring his soul. However, she was brutally killed by Angel in season 2's episode 'Passion', keeping the secret ritual of restoration for a long time...

ANYA
Appearances: seasons 3 to 7, all episodes except for Graduation Day part 2, season 4 episodes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7& 8 and season 6's Normal Again.
First serious spell ever cast: The alternate dimension spell in The Wish.
Memorable spells: The spell that summoned vampy Willow and the protection spell against evil veiny Willow.
Magickal: Anya Emerson was actually a vengeance demon called Anyanka. She first appeared in The Wish, when she was cursed to live a human life again. As a vengeance demon, she granted wishes to scorned women (thus creating the alternate dimension in The Wish). In 'Döppelgangland', she brought alterante-vampy-Willow from that dimension to their own. Still, this wasn't the most powerful spell she ever did. In Tabula Rasa (season 6), she created a whole bunch of bunnies in the Magic Box (of which she's terribly afraid), and in 'Two to Go', she cast an incredibly powerful spell to protect Jonathan and Andrew against evil-veiny-Willow. In the episode 'Hell's Bells', Anya got her powers as a vengeance demon back, but continued helping the Scoobies, realising, she was evil anymore...

AMY
Appearances: Witch, Bewitched, bothered & bewildered, Gingerbread, Something Blue, Smashed, Wrecked and Doublemeat Palace.
First serious spell ever cast: Love spell for Xander in Bewitched, bothered & bewildered.
Memorable spells: spell that turned Buffy into a rat (B, B & B), spell to turn herself into a rat in Gingerbread, spell on Willow to make everything she touches wither and die.
Magickal: Amy Madison first appeared in the third episode, 'Witch', as the daughter of the powerful witch Catherine. As later turned out in 'Bewitched, bothered and bewildered', Amy was quite the witch herself, as she cast a love spell that made all women fall in love with Xander. She then joined a wicca goup with Willow and Michael, but this caused them all to be persecuted in the season 3 episode 'Gingerbread'. When Amy was to be burned to the stake she turned herself into a rat, thus escaping! She remained a rat for several years, cared for by Willow (who even accidentally brought her back for a second in Something Blue). In the Season 6 episode 'Smashed', a lonely Willow realises she knows how to return Amy's human form, and the two of them go out to cause magickal havoc and mischief. Amy introduces Willow to Rack, a magician who gets Willow addicted to magic. After they've had some more fun, Willow comes to her senses and tells Amy to leave her alone for good...

ETHAN
Appearances: season 2 episodes Halloween & Dark Ages, season 3's Band candy and season 4's A New Man.
First serious spell ever cast: Spell to turn everyone into what they dressed up as, at Halloween.
Memorable spells: the spell that caused Chaos and enchanted everyone's costumes at Halloween, the spell that turned everyone into teenagers and the potion that turned giles into a Fyarl demon.
Magickal: Ethan Rayne is one of Giles's lovely old buddies, who worships the Chaos demon Janus. He's very devious and nasty, never keeps a promise and really conniving. He first showed up in 'Halloween', where he owned a costume shop and turned everyone into the costume they'd bought. In 'dark Ages', Ethan and Giles are confronted with their past when a demon they summoned in the good old days, comes after them to kill them. In season 4's episode 'A New Man', Ethan takes Giles out for a birthday drink, but lets him drink a potion that turned Giles into a Fyarl demon! He was finally captured by Buffy and taken away by the initiative to a government base...

JONATHAN
Appearances: several episodes throughout the years, like Inca Mummy Girl, What's My Line? part 2, Passion, Go Fish, Dead Mans Party, Homecoming, The Wish, Dopplegangland, Earshot, The Prom, Graduation Day Part 2, Superstar and season 6, episodes 4, 5, 9, 11, 13, and all of them from Normal Again to Grave.
First serious spell ever cast: spell to make him incredibly popular and perfect at everything, in Superstar.
Memorable spells: the above, as well as the spell that got Buffy trapped in a time loop in Life serial.
Magickal: Little Jonathan Levinson, the big dabbler! He was a nerdy little guy that never really got noticed although he was always around. He has dabbled in the black arts, even succeeding in performing a spell that made him the greatest guy on the planet (he was a star basketball player singer, slayer, businessman, lover and so on and so on) with even Buffy adoring him! In Season 6 however, he teamed up with co-nerds Warren and Andrew to take over Sunnydale. Using magic to throw Buffy off guard, he worked side by side with the other two but remained sort of good -he even helped Buffy defeat warren in Seeing Red! After Willow had tried to kill them, he and Andrew finally ran off to Mexico in Grave...

ANDREW
Appearances: Flooded, Life Serial, Smashed, Gone, Dead things, Normal Again, Entropy, Seeing Red, Villains, Two To Go & Grave.
First serious spell ever cast: The spell that made Buffy hallucinate into thinking she was a psychiatric patient in Nomral Again.
Magickal: Andrew was a part of the nerd herd, working mostly with evil animals before that (he trained evil flying monkeys to attack the school play, durrr!), and he sort of had a crush on Warren (and Spike, hehe!). Magic is not really his specialty, although he did summon a powerful demon in Normal Again, which made Buffy think Sunnydale wasn't real and she was a schizo in L.A. In Grave, he left for Mexico with Jonathan and that's the last we've seen of them for now.

CATHERINE
Appearance: Season 1's Witch.
First serious spell ever cast: Switching bodies with her daughter Amy to relive her glory days as a cheerleader.
Memorable spells: A whole lot for one eppy: she made Cordy go blind, lit a girl on fire, 'sowed' another cheerleader's mouth shut, and a powerful spell that weakened Buffy when she tried out for the squad.
Magickal: Catherine Madison is Amy's mother and had been a witch for a long time. She was also one of Sunnydale High's best cheerleaders ever. Wanting to relive her glory days, she pushed Amy into trying out. When Amy didn't make the squad, Catherine switched bodies with her to rekindle her old fame. Luckily, Giles blocks and breaks her spells, and when she tries to send Buffy to the 'Dark Place', Buffy makes the spell reverse and traps Catherine into her cheerleading statue!

RACK
Appearances: Wrecked, Villains and Two To go.
First serious spell ever cast: 'Dealing' black magic, Rack makes his customers high on the magics...
Magickal: Rack is a dark warlock, who deals in black magic, inducing it on witches and demon and making them euforic. Because of this, his hideout is always on the move and really in somewhat of another dimension. Only demon senses (and powerful witches, of course) can track him down. Willow was Rack's pet, his 'Strawberry', and he tried to get her addicted. However when Willow turned evil, she paid Rack a visit and drained all his powers from him, leaving her completely filled with black magic and leaving Rack killed...

GWENDOLYN
Appearance: Revelations (season 3)
First serious spell ever cast: Empowering the Glove of Myhnegon.
Magickal: Gwendolyn Post was a former member of the Watcher's council, and pretended to have come to Sunnydale as Faith's new Watcher. In fact, she wnated the 'Glove of Myhnegon' that would make her all-powerful. But just in time, Buffy cut off her arm and she was struck by lighting and incinerated.

MICHAEL
Appearance: Season 3's Gingerbread.
First serious spell ever cast: A protection spell for Buffy (together with Amy and Willow).
Magickal: Michael Czajak (sp?) appeared in the show as a guy who was in a magickal gathering with Amy and Willow. They perform a spell to protect Buffy through a symbol, but later on this symbol is found on the bodies of some small children! Of course, this is a demon's doing, but the entire town goes into a witch-presectuing)mass-hysteria, led by Buffy and willow's moms! Michael is nearly killed by a so-called angry mob, but luckily Buffy saves the day.
